Fun with iPhone - iPhone App Selection

If you're new to the iPhone scene, you might want to jump right into the fun stuff without reading the whole manual.

With the analytical techie sitting on my left shoulder screeching, "NOOO!" I'm going to tell you how to get to the fun stuff because the fun stuff is what makes the iPhone worth getting. (The phone service ain't so bad but with all this more fun stuff to do, you won't want to chitchat so much anymore.) I'm willing to bet you've probably already figured out how to turn it off and on, so I'll just skip ahead to the fun.

These are my most frequently used apps - all of them are FREE!

Most of these applications will work on iPod Touch as long as you can hook up to wireless Internet. NOTE: Oftentimes, you cannot hook up to wireless Internet (as I found out at my gym), so if you want to use these apps, all the time, best to get an iPhone. Additionally, some of these apps require a microphone, which are very inexpensive, for the iPod Touch. The iPhone has built-in microphone (which you use for phone calls)

Amazon Mobile Read reviews, buy stuff, compare prices on Amazon. Kindle Who needs to buy $199 Kindle, when you can buy Kindle Books from Amazon this way. Just read books on your iPhone. Books are so 18th century!

Epicurious Free. Awesome recipe consolidator for the recipe collector. Also helpful: Woman's Day Cooking Assistant includes a cook time calculator, prep guide and spice dictionary.

DizzyBeeFree Fun Crazy Game.

Jott Voice recognition notes. Try it, you'll see. So much better than Voice Notes, or the old Keyboard Notes Bug. Free (however it does require a paid Online account). You could also try Evernote: Anything you need to jot down fast, be it in text, a photo, or a voice note, Evernote will keep it, index it, and sync it to the online subscription service.

Dragon Dictation Dictate voice messages and have them translated while you watch. Need to add microphone to iPod Touch for this to work.

Forsquare Super cool way to let friends know where you are by "checking in." Also a good way to find reviews for wherever you are. Uses GPS in your mobile device. Avail for Android, Blackberry, Palm and others.

Paper Toss Very low tech game. You get to throw a piece of paper in the trash. Hours on mindless fun. One of my favorites!

BMW M Power Meter Very cool way to watch speed, distance and other car measurements - for BMW owners and BMW wannabe owners ;-)

Fring - All the Instant Messenger Products in one cool program, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, AOL Chat, MSN.

Tap Tap Revenge Probably the best free game available now. Guitar hero for your fingertips.

AOL Radio This is the game changing app and the paradigm shifter in mobile. Free streaming radio, including internet radio stations (all Pearl Jam, all the time, anyone? Anyone?). Just wait until they have TV. AOL is cool again.

Yelp. Nice implementation of the restaurant, doctor, gym, coffee shop, bar, favorite IT Company (:-)) (and other companies as well) reviews site.

Loopt. Ping your friends and see where they are. Loopt Pulse, a newer feature, helps you find and plan events in your area.

Weather Bug. More accurate weather, weather web cams, and radar maps than the apple's built in app, Weather.

SportsTap. Also free. Sports scores from all sports. (You could get MLB.com At Bat for $5 program lets you track games in progress, which is no big deal. The big deal is that you can actually watch video clips of key plays before the games are over. But SportsTap is freer and better.)

Baby Scratch. Who doesn't need to scratch records hiphop style while waiting for public transportation? The least expensive DJ equipment available for $0.00! If scratchin's not your thing but music still is, check out Karajan Beginner - Free, fun music lessons, tuning ear to music.

Teddy Pendergrass and Other African American Men Die Too Young

You may not have heard about this due to the necessary media focus on Haiti at the time, but legend/singer/Grammy winner Teddy Pendergrass passed away at 59 from colon cancer on January 13th. Remember "If You Don't Know Me By Now?" That song, among others, still unearths sentimental feelings in a hard-shelled friend of mine. I can't stop thinking of Love TKO!

After an accident in 1982, Pendergrass was paralyzed from the waist down. In 1985, he founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, whose sole mission is "to create a coordinated outreach organization that encourages and assists individuals with spinal chord injuries (SCI) to achieve their maximum potential in areas of education, employment, housing, productivity and overall independence."

What a mission, what a voice, what a man.

His death got me to thinking about other men that the world has lost way before their time, in recent years, who have one small something in common : Teddy Pendergrass (59) Luther Vandross (54), Bernie Mac (50), Isaac Hayes (65), Edwin Starr (61), Barry White (60), Gregory Hines (57), Michael Jackson (50). This led me to research on the average lifespan of American Black Males. Surprisingly, the lifespan is 8 years shorter than that of their white counterparts. This article explains many reasons why this is the case, and as it turns out, the reasons usually lead back to the cause of racial disparity in America.

It might be a stretch to link Pendergrass' cause of death (colon cancer) to race--or racism, this gives us an opportunity to raise awareness about equality in America. Perhaps his colon cancer was caused by an element of the poverty-prone lifestyle he endured in his childhood with his single mother. Perhaps the cancer could be directly related to the incident that caused the paralysis (it is surprising how many medical problems occur after spinal trauma, and it is likely that link can be made). If the accident was at all drug- or alcohol-related, statistically that can be represented by poverty (which links back to race in America).

A stretch, maybe. But consider this discredited hypothesis trying to explain the disparity between American White and American Black males: In 2007, according to Dr. Oz (yes, the Oprah doctor), African Americans are more prone to heart-related conditions, because Africans that survived the Midlle Passage were able to do so because of their blood's ability to sustain high levels of salt content.

This theory has been repeatedly discredited and found amongst my research. As stated in the article, "Although predisposition to salt retention may have advantaged some individual slaves, other factors -- such as new selective pressures in North America and mating with non-Africans -- would have increased genetic variability, not constricted today's African American population to one common hypertension gene. As studied today, no contemporary West African population suffers from rampant hypertension."

The author in this quoted story, Osagie K. Obasogie, states quite well, "Rather, in a world with finite resources, it's regrettable that we continue to invest millions of research dollars -- and valuable public air time --looking for genes to explain racial disparities in health, when so many causes lie simply in how we treat one another."

A sterling example of an amazing African-American male who's taken care of his body and preached about taking care of one's health is 77 year-old Dick Gregory, as seen in this wonderful talk about taking better care of ourselves. Love his description about the liver - removing the "r" - and live, by taking care of this organ!

Stevie Wonder - aged 59 - if you're reading this - please get your blood pressure screened regularly and take care of that body!

I'll end by sharing a wonderful tribute to many of these and many other crooners.

I'm sure I've missed lots of folk. These are just some of the men that came to mind and have saddened me. Please feel free to share your memories here.

iPad Killer? Compaq AirLife / Lenovo Skylight Smartbooks

Q: What do you get when you cross a Smart Phone and a Netbook?
A: A Smartbook!

Introducing 2 new products in the Smartbook Category: Compaq Airlife 100 and Lenovo Skylight. It's weird, compared to the iPad, these 2 machines shine a very bright light! The Airlife looks like a Macbook and the Skylight looks like an iPhone/iPad. Weird. It sure would be cool if there was a unified platform re: apps, so we didn't have to go to everyone's "store" to buy apps, but I don't see consolidation any time soon (although the major Mobile carriers and Phone manufacturers are releasing their own app stores in the coming weeks with an attempt at grabbing a piece of the very lucrative App market) - as these are major money makers for Apple, Palm & Google. I wonder whose store Lenovo will be using to sell movies & music.

Compaq Airlife 100
Compaq recently announced the Airlife 100. It's a small Netbook-like computer with 10" screen. Difference? It has Google Android OS which gives it a lot more flexibility and speed over traditional operating systems such as Windows and Mac OS X. It has "instant on" like a phone, a cool webcam, 3 G broadband, wireless, and more. The other cool feature - it's a touch screen like another product that was recently released - oh yeah, the iPad.

Has cool task bar along the bottom - looks quite like the MacOS Dock.

Too bad it doesn't have a swivel screen. If it did, you could close and it would be exactly like an iPad.

The Skylight was actually introduced before the HP/Google device, so it can claim to be the first Smartbook. The operating system is "gadget-based" rather than browser based. It's like have 6 little webpages per screen. You can scroll through the pages, just like an iPhone/iPad, by swiping your fingers across the screen. Comes with 18 pre-loaded and I'm sure there will be tons of free and paid for ones. Comes pre-loaded with Faceobook, Amazon, Gmail and more gadgets.

Since Verizon will be offering Skype in March of 2010, for both Android & Blackberry phones finally, my guess is that both these mobile devices will also have Skype offerings.

Pricing? Not sure on either. Will most likely be $499 w/2 year contract; more with no contract.

One last question - Where does this leave Apple Mac OS and Microsoft Windows for the Desktop and Laptop computer? Could be obsolete in next 5-10 years, if things progress at this pace.

Apple does it again - New Macs - new iMacs

If you haven't been to the Apple Store recently, you must go and see these gorgeous machines. The new displays are incredible and the monstrous 27" iMac is unbelievable!! (That's more than two feet, the size of my cousin's toddler! But really, the screen is the only "monstrous" thing. Everything else is absolutely beautiful.)

On October 20th, Apple unveiled their new Apple Macbook notebook computer. How did they manage the new Macbook so light with the super-serious battery? The most important change will be the new battery, a lithium polymer battery built right into the enclosure. Apple says you'll get up to 7 hours on a single charge, and even though the battery isn't removable, you'll manage to charge the battery 1,000 times before the battery dies the long death. The battery is warranted for 1 year after purchase. To replace battery, You need to either send the Mac back to Apple (3-4 day turnaround) or take it to store for same day replacement. Costs - $129 (13" & 15") - $179 (17") for new battery.

I'm gonna get onto a little techie soapbox here, because this is really important: In addition to the new, improved battery, the Apple Macbook will also get a graphical boost from an NVIDIA GeForce Mobility 9400M chipset, the same used in the smallest Macbook Pro 13-inch model. That graphics power will drive a new LED-backlit, 13.3-inch display, running at a 1280 by 800 pixel resolution, which should be great for watching HD movies at 720p or better. The new screen is all glossy, and sits flush with the glass bezel on the top lid of the notebook, just like on the new Macbook Pro models.

Unlike the Macbook Pros, the new Apple Macbook will be built with a polycarbonate plastic shell. Apple offers some non-slip resistance for their new plastic design to help the laptop stick to airline trays and laps. This machine gets a glass trackpad, without buttons, which supports up to 4 finger gestures (no snickering here). You just slide your fingers over the pad to make the mouse move.

The new Apple Macbook is only 1.08-inches thin and weighs 4.7 pounds. The notebook uses an Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.26 GHz. The standard configuration ships with 2GB or DDR3 RAM and a 250GB hard disk drive, but you can bump both of those to 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive.

Honestly, we've seen $300 netbooks with better port selection. You get 2 USB 2.0 ports, an Audio In/Out port, Gigabit Ethernet and a mini DisplayPort. First of all, we'd like to see more USB ports, which isn't an unreasonable request for a $999 machine. Second, mini DisplayPort is a cruel choice for what is essentially the bargain Mac laptop. (DisplayPort monitors are rare, and adapters can be expensive.)
Fully loaded the new Macbook (list at $999) will cost you $1,250, with more RAM and HDD storage. As a comparison, the low end of the Windows 7 line of Laptops runs at $399. This low end Windows machine is bigger 15.4" compared to 13", heavier, has only 1-2 hour battery compared to 7 hour on Macbook, doesn't have the cool "class" of the Apple machine, and its screen will not be as classy as the Macbook. On the other hand, with it you can read your email, surf the web, go on Facebook and Twitter using wired and wireless connectivity.

FYI: Rumor has it there will be a huge sale on Macs, ONE DAY ONLY at the Mac store on 11/27/2009, Black Friday. Up to 30% off iPods, Up to 25% off Macs!

The competition continues to heat up: Snow Leopard is released; Mac's revamped line of its Macbook and iBook. Windows 7 was just released. You gotta love competition. Oh yeah: and the new iPod nano takes video! Pretty sweet, right?

Amma - a wondrous presence - Mother Teresa 2.0

I was deeply moved by seeing Amma, the mother, last night. I had to share my experience to all of you.

There obviously cannot ever be another Mother Teresa.

After my Amma experience last night, I couldn't help but think I was in the presence of a woman (Amma) who is following in Mother Teresa's steps, trailblazing her own path. At the time of Mother Teresa's death, in 1997, there here Missionaries of Charity continued to expand, and at the time of her death it was operating 610 missions in 123 countries, including hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, children's and family counseling programs, orphanages, and schools. Here Missionaries of Charity continue their work to this day.

I love Amma's purpose in life:
" I realize my purpose is to console - to personally wipe away tears through selfless love, compassion, and service." Amma.

Yesterday, a group of us (Rob, Elaine, Ginger, Barbara and myself) went to give oodles of Free Hugs and get Hugged by Amma. I knew the event started at 7 pm, so we got there by 5 pm. Figured it would last from 7 pm to 9 pm and I'd be home by 11 pm at the latest. Boy, was I in for a surprise.

We got to the Amma Retreat center in San Ramon and were greeting with thousands of people waiting in line to see Amma. We made it through the throngs of people, camped out in fold chairs, took the plastic cap off our chair and waited. and waited. and waited. After the first hour of giving free hugs to those waiting in line and stuffing ourselves with Samosas, we started making friends with those around us, waiting in the overflow room, soon to become the Amma restaurant. Personally, I met Taj from Berkeley, Julie from Berkeley, Cindy from Fremont, Tonya from Washington/Barstow/Alaska/Hawaii, Brianna from Santa Cruz, a gentleman from Ashland, OR who's been following Amma with his wife (whom he met at an Amma retreat) for 10+ years. These folks ranged in ages from 25 to 75. There were lots of babies, families, single folk, couples, all ethnicities here. I couldn't help but thinking of some of the wonderful experiences I had at Grateful Dead concerts, except for the fact that beyond spreading joy, happiness and love, Amma was channeling her energy to wiping out misery and poverty throughout the world.

So, after lots of Samosas, a full vegan Vegetarian meal, and a HUGE salad and lots of chatting and meeting new people, the time had come to get my hug. I was in group "N7." Group A1 started at 7 pm. It was now 230 am. As I waited in my chair, moving closer and closer, I began to imagine the real power, strength and tireless energy of this woman. Here, I had been whining, a little, about waiting 7.5 hours to see here, but she had been doing this all week - tirelessly (although I'm sure she was a bit tired!) - all week - until the early morning hours.

I got on stage, got closer to Amma, then in a whisk of a moment, she hugged me, said something in a language I didn't understand, and it was done.

I had been blessed by an angel.

Practicality is king in today's business standards. Practical pricing, practical timing, practical office furniture, practically everything is best when it's practical. Meetings are not always practical but they are almost always necessary.

Interesting fact: one study recently showed that the people who dislike meetings the most are the ones who are most responsible or getting the most things done in an average workday. Sometimes too many cooks spoil the broth. If your on-the-run clientele might prefer the high-tech solution as opposed to the customer service phone-interview, consider listing your business here as well as scheduling your own appointments and services. Windows 7 - To Buy or Not to Buy - That is the Question

So, Windows 7 has been out for a while now and you're probably asking yourself, "Am I missing out on the fun? Should I upgrade?"

First off, a generality about Windows 7: it's a renaming/re-branding of Windows Vista. No matter what smokescreen/clouds people tell you, it's really a VERY NICE upgrade to Windows Vista. When Vista came out, it was a completely different operating system, so much of hardware wasn't compatible, people needed new hardware (like new printers, new computers) and people complained a lot. With Windows 7, all hardware is Vista compliant, so it's Windows 7 compliant.

If you have Windows XP and you're generally happy with your system, I recommend staying with current system. More than likely, you won't have a powerful enough machine for Windows 7.

If you have Windows Vista system, and you've been unhappy with slowness of machine, you are a perfect candidate for Windows 7 upgrade.

If you're buying a new computer, make sure to get a Windows 7 machine. There are still some refurbished Desktops and Laptops with Vista. For Netbooks, I'd stay with Windows XP.

The Benefits of Windows 7
Faster Performance - You should see a major increase over Vista.

Digital Hub - You will find it much easier to connect network devices, such as digital music hubs, multiple computers, etc.

Improved Navigation - Strips out much of Vistas bloat and makes Navigation easier. You'll also see a thumbnail of each open window - when you move your mouse over icon in the bar below. You'll see a completely new taskbar which has improved functionality.

Better Compatibility - As mentioned, most of the compatibility bugs were worked out in Vista, so Windows 7 should work with most hardware and software products made from 2-3 years ago to present. If you have just 1-2 programs that will only run in Windows XP, get the free (amazingly) windows virtual pc software from Microsoft that let's you run Windows XP progams separately from Windows 7. Beware: this software could be a bit tricky to install.

Gestures (like iPhone, Macs). This means that if you have a screen you can touch (such as a tablet), you'll be able to touch icons, move icons and use other hand movements instead of using a mouse.

Music Streaming- From one Windows 7 to another Windows 7 machine is very easy. Only problem - you need to buy another Windows 7 computer to make this work!

Better Security - User Account Control (UAC) which made you approve ever little change, is now highly modifiable. You can have it be much less intrusive.

Oh, and did you think to yourself, "I think I'll just upgrade to Windows 7 from my Windows XP system. How hard can that be?" Well, it's not a simple answer. You'll either:
a) Have to do a clean install and re-install all your applications and data - thus wiping out your Windows XP
b) Do a "dual boot," which means you won't have access to your Windows XP data and will have to re-install all your applications - like Word, Excel, etc. . . .

Bottom line - I would only upgrade from XP to Windows 7 if you have a computer sitting around you don't mind if everything gets wiped off.

Bye-bye, slow Vista Bus!

When I was a young lad in school (many, many moons ago), we had one projector for the entire hall of classrooms to share, which was an enormously heavy and awkward monster that had its own cart that the teacher would have to prop open a door just to wheel in. This cart was complete with a very high-tech cassette-tape player or a record player that would narrate the slideshow, which would make a loud "BOOP!" sound to let Ms. Carter know it was time to push the button to forward to the next still.

The debate of which one is better is still up for argument. This poll shows the two at neck and neck. It really depends on your usage and needs: The larger, slightly bulkier Dell M109S has a sharper image. But the MPro110 fits in your pocket.

You still need another source for sound. May I recommend something other than a cassette-tape player?

Pico Pocket Project PK-101 $215 (no, NOT Pico Pocket Protector, but it is about that size!)

This is definitely a bit on the low end as far as a full-fledged projector, but would be great for small trainings or watching a movie in a bedroom. Randy knew that he had pancreatic cancer. On August 15th, 2007, he was told, "you have 3-6 months of 'good health' left." His doctor's estimated prognosis of death was January 15th, 2008. Randy died July 25, 2008, 3 weeks shy of living 12 months with the one of the deadliest of cancers. During this time he completed his "Bucket List," the things to do before "I die." What's on your bucket list? How far have you gotten down the list? What do you need to prepare to make the really special item happen?

Time Management by Randy Pausch

This lecture, given on February 15, 2008 - 6 months after his death sentence - moves me: Randy honors his commitment to deliver a lecture to the University of Virginia, knowing he'll be dying soon. The poignant video above has gone around the world numerous times. The "Time Management" Video is growing, more because of its usefulness than its tear-jerking ability. He says, "Time is the only commodity that matters." He goes on to tell us that Americans are really great at using and managing money as a commodity...but not so much with time.

Here's a few more important points I took away from one (but DON'T skip watching! It's really worth it - I promise)

He has some really awesome tips on making phone calls! (Mine are moving right along now.)
His message on Goals, priorities and planning - and a system for prioritizing is easy to understand and brings focus where it is needed.
He talks about the danger that many people encounter by focusing on doing things right. Instead, Do the right things. This is something I've put into practice, and let me tell you: it is NOT as easy as it sounds. But 15 years of vegetarianism later, I can definitely say that I am doing something right.

If you feel that you don't have time to watch these videos, do yourself a favor and watch them.

You have more to gain than just time. And more at stake than your job. Watch it.

To know me is to know about my passion for food--particularly vegan food. Food is everything to any culture. It is imperative that we take a close examination of our lifestyles as humans in the plugged-in 21st century. Thirty percent of American meals are eaten in the car. In the car. This information is not any easier to digest than the hormone-injected all-beef patty on a sesame seed bun. This ritual that is performed daily or with family that is so vital to our health and existence deserves more sacredness. Having delighted in my soap box, I go on to say this: The Eat Real Fest was so much fun.

Real Food is grown, agricultured. Not driven-thru. Last weekend, the Eat Real Festival was held in Oakland California. The Eat Real Movement is indicative of the Slow Food Movement, was successfully designed for "putting the FOOD back in 'Fast Food'." So, if we can't all change our lifestyles in a snap, we will still need some form of instant-grat food. But if instant-grat food is a corporate chain, our communities suffer one small dollar menu item at a time. Enter the "street vendors." All the local street vendors agreed to use local farms for all the ingredients for dishes served at the festival for $6 or less a pop. The result? A flurry of happy community involvement!

I spoke with a volunteer at the beer shack. He told me about a study done in a community of Oakland: Five years ago, it was easier to find drugs downtown than a salad! He went on to say, that he'd grown up there, and now, something is happening. The happening is an energy that could be felt from every person there. Then he told me that all the proceeds from beer sales were distributed to three charities that work towards injecting real food (less processed, more connected food) into lower-income communities. I bought the $25 beer-tasting. Then I met the farmers in the indoor Farmers Market.

Another favorite of mine with the TCHO Chocolate. It's locally manufactured chocolate - in San Francisco - and the name stands for "T"echnology CHOcolate. I love the way the owner is designer virtual tour so he can monitor the chocolate as it's being manufactured. They have a cool flavor wheel which helps you pick out thhe perfect chocolate.

The promotion of food from local counties in Northern California to locals and foodies was entertaining and fun. This is going to be an annual event, with more artists, more "street food" and more exposure for the great cause. Get there! Where else are you gonna find a living salad bowl?

As much as we all carry disdain for the person two and a half feet away, screaming into a device about something horrendously boring, none of us can think of letting go of our toys.

Now the toys are fighting back against maniacal cell-phone perpetrators. Rules of etiquette, hands-free laws, and personal preference: As we progress in this digital era, our gadgets are changing the way we communicate. One useful change I want to see a lot of: Virtual answering and transcribing services.

Reading voicemail is much more convenient than listening to voicemail. If you don't believe me, think back to the last time someone left you a message with a phone number or address, and you tried to memorize it because you were driving.

Passwords - You really need to change yours!

First off, let me just say this: Yes, passwords are important. Many of us tell ourselves that they are just formalities, or that you don't store information online or on a hard drive, but the facts are this: Someone, somewhere, "keeps your record on file." I'm not saying we should all have less faith in our neighbors, but someone is keeping close tabs on you, and there is no harm in protecting yourself. So change your pasword. It is the simplest and least expensive identity and privacy protection you can get.

So, now that that diatribe is out of the way, let's be frank about the actual password. In short, make it a good one. Yup, having your child's and/or pet's name as your password, not such a good idea. And don't even try to keep inquiring minds away with "love" or "god."

"Aagh!! It's like my computer's haunted!" she squealed, just before breaking up into an uproarious laughter. She was in upstate New York. I was at my computer from Sunnyvale, and I was in control. It was a match made in techie heaven.

LogMeIn.com allows users to control their clients' devices for remote support, access and backup. This is a good thing, but don't get all Big Brother paranoid: It won't work without express permission from both users. So let's say there's a problem in the office with the network. The client calls me, and you know the rest: "Nothing communicates, the printer doesn't respond, we've got a deadline to meet at 5:00, and I don't know anything about this stuff!"

As long as a) She's downloaded and Installed Log Me In and b) She's given me her username and password, we can fix this. I now have complete control of her cursor, her windows, all of it. She gets to watch me fix her computer without me having to spend time, money, and carbon-neutrality on gas getting over to her office.

If you're the client, you get to put the phone on speaker, grab some popcorn and enjoy the show while I zip through the Start menu, the control panel, your bachelor party pictures on Facebook--just kidding!--and get it done in a matter of moments. No one has to install anything for the instant, in-service, IT support. This works on PCs, Macs, Smartphones & iPhones. Maybe even as a practical joke on the gullible schmuck in the cubical next door. Again: Kidding!

Another awesome application is that if you work away from home but have to occasionally check your home email or listen to a tune or two. You can install Log Me In on your home comptuer and access it from work. LogMeIn.com is rarely blocked at the office, since IT guys and gals use it so much!

P.S. Whenever we work on someone's machine, we explicitly "disable" Log Me In when we leave. Home after a glorious 3 day mini-vacation to Loon Lake in the Eldorado National Forest - on the way to Tahoe - 4+ hours to get there from Sunnyvale! Would recommend it highly to everyone. Highlight - jumping from 30' rock. Went with LuvMonkey's group. Had a wonderful time. Hiked - Swam - Ate - Jumped off 30' Rock. Got a little sunburn, too. All in all - a Great trip!

Wow! GPS for only $59 and a 1 T backup drive for only $89 - go for it!

A friend told me a story recently about a colleague who walked into her office, in a panic about backing up the organization's files: "When do you do backups? How long has it been? I woke up in the middle of the night worrying about this. I couldn't find a backup disk. What if the hard drive crashed? WHAT WOULD WE DO?"

One of my fantasy dream jobs as a teen: Rolling Stone Reviewer. Just like that kid in Almost Famous. Now, I'm livin' that dream a little bit these days...almost...just not quite as much as that kid in Almost Famous. Hey, everyone's got a day job--and like anyone else with a day job--or anyone without-- I'm always looking for new ways to connect. Social networking is the easiest and cheapest way to expand your web presence. Why not combine it with your love for music?

Pandora. If you have not met Pandora, please, please, you must go. It's too user friendly to pass up. Just type in an artist or song, and the "music genome project" spits out a tune that you are likely to enjoy--not always the exact song you picked, but something that sounds good to you. You have now created a station on Pandora. You like many different types of music, so you can create ten stations. Veterans of Pandora will be glad to hear that they can share their stations. On Facebook, sure. On Pandora itself, too. See what you're friends are listening to. Type my gmail address in and let's share stations. Ever wanted to try a Microsoft product for almost a year for free? Now's the time! Get Windows 7, Release Candidate 1 for no charge. It expires 6/1/2010, but starts shutting down, every 2 hours on 3/1/2010. Best to buy some time - mid February next year . . . or . .

Thanks to a tip from my buddy Fred, you can get a pre-order version for only $50 for the Premium HOME version. I know, Apple fans - it's STILL $20 more than Mac Operating System - Snow Leopard upgrade (which is only $30! when it gets released) - but it's still a deal!

This is a great time for you Mac users out there who haven't tried Windows under Bootcamp to give it a go! You can try until June of next year and only buy if you use it regularly. Great for web designers (Cyndi - hint, hint), who need to test sites on Internet Explorer 8 (and before!).

Notes on Installing Windows 7:

There are extensive notes about creating DVD using Active ISO for Windows, Mac has this feature built-in from download and installing Windows 7. Read very thoroughly. These are just a few notes from Microsoft's website:

Be very careful and DON'T PUT THIS ON YOUR REGULAR PC.

Dedicated test PC: Please don't test the RC on your primary home or business PC.
Data backup: The information on your PC will not be saved during installation. Back up your PC before you start, and frequently during testing. You can back up files to an external hard disk, a DVD or CD, or a network folder. (See How to back up a PC.) If you're running Windows 7 Beta on the PC you'll use for test, you can use Windows Easy Transfer to create a backup on an external drive. To find and launch Windows Easy Transfer, just type "easy" in the Start search box.
Recovery disc: A recovery disc restores your computer to its out-of-the-box state. Most computers come with one. If yours didn't, contact your PC maker.
Antivirus program: Make sure your antivirus program is up-to-date, run it, then disable it before installing Windows 7 RC. When you finish the installation, remember to re-enable the antivirus program.
Internet connection: Be sure to connect to the Internet after you finish the installation. Being connected helps make sure you get useful security and hardware updates. We recommend you keep your PC set to automatically check for updates through Windows Update.

Why, you ask, did I put such a funky logo at top? Well, Windows 7 looks a lot like Vista, but major changes have been made "under the hood."
